Welcome to the Canyon Hills Math Department!

  • The math department is busy getting the students familiarized with the new textbook. We have instituted a three-ring binder and tabs system for the students to keep their math book pages. The students may leave their books at home and tear out the necessary pages needed per their teacher for each chapter.

The new common core math standards insist that students understand the concepts (Why does this work?), follow the procedure (How do we do these problems?), and can apply the skill (When do we need this?). In order to accomplish this we will be working on developing the following mathematical practices:

    1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.

    2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively

    3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

    4. Model with mathematics

    5. Use appropriate tools strategically

    6. Attend to precision

    7. Look for and make use of structure

    8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Our first math meet was a success! The math department has monthly math meets where the students work collaboratively on mathematical tasks. We love parent volunteers on math meet days, so if you are interested please contact Vicki Pearl/PTSA or Michelle Buck at michelle_buck@chino.k12.ca.us
